Charles Darwin, founder of modern evolutionary theory, became a naturalist on a voyage around the world.For mare magazine, I sought out and photographed places in South America where the young Charles Darwin made observations that would later prove fundamental to his theory of evolution. My photographs were published alongside passages from his travel journals.The journey culminated in the Galápagos Islands, where Darwin came closer to what he called 'the mystery of mysteries' — the origin of new species.

A typological approach to fly fishingNew Zealand attracts fly fishers from all over the world. They come in search of clear rivers, wild trout and, perhaps, the perfect moment. Yet they are rarely seen. Most of the time they stand alone or in pairs, scattered along countless rivers and streams.Over the years, I have photographed around 120 of them. Never with a fish.A fly fisher spends much of the time looking at water. What matters, however, is largely invisible. From the movement of the current, the shape of the river, a rising fish or an insect on the surface, the angler constructs an image of the world beneath. Experience and imagination fill in what cannot be seen.Photography is not so different.The photographer, too, looks at what is there and tries to see beyond it. An image begins before the shutter is released — through observation, experience and intuition. Both photographer and angler read signs, anticipate what might happen, choose a position and wait. Neither can force the moment.Sometimes the fish rises. Sometimes the picture appears.

The term She Shed describes a female counterpart to the “man cave” — a private space for retreat, contemplation and pursuing one’s own interests.She Shed, however, is less about being a woman than about taking a feminist position. The project explores gender roles and identity, and questions forms of exclusion implied by the very idea of gendered spaces.I photographed artists in New Zealand in the spaces they have created for themselves — places in which to work, withdraw and pursue their interests.

Voyages of Discovery in the PacificIn 1769, Captain James Cook reached New Zealand aboard the Endeavour and subsequently circumnavigated and mapped the two main islands.I set out to photograph places mentioned in the Endeavour logbook. But I soon found that many had already been marked by monuments, memorials and plaques commemorating Cook’s presence.These traces of remembrance became part of the project. Following Cook’s route around New Zealand, I photographed them alongside places recorded in the logbook or named by Cook and his crew.The project was supported by Stiftung Kulturwerk of VG Bild-Kunst, Germany.
